Hiking from Omalo to Shatili and Kazbegi is one of the most popular treks in Georgia. During the tour, guests will visit Tusheti, Khevsureti and Khevi – unique provinces of the Caucasus in eastern Georgia. The Guests can visit the most beautiful villages in Georgia in the Pirikita chain of Tusheti, reach the 3400 m high Atsunta pass and descend to the tower villages Mutso and Shatili. After that they cross Chaukhi Pass and admire great views on Mount Kazbegi, the rock mountain Chaukhi and the Khevi region.

 

This is probably the most breathtaking trail you can imagine. Tusheti and khevsureti are hardly accessible and for this reason preserve local traditions and special architectural styles such as stone towers and houses. The guests have the opportunity to get to know the traditions and culture of the highlands, to discover old villages and fortresses that are located on the steep slopes of high mountains.

The Tour Itinerary

 

Day 1
Trip to East Georgia.
Driving distance 120 Km.
Tbilisi - Through Gombori Pass - Ujarma Fortress - Telavi Market - Tsinandali Palace and Museum - Shumi Wine Factory - Gremi Fortress - Nekresi - Telavi.
Drive to East Georgia to Kakheti region Kakheti, famous for wines and various historical monuments. On this day guests have the opportunity to visit some of the highlights and taste Georgian wine.

Day 2
Trip to Tusheti. Telavi - Akhmeta - Keselo - Omalo.
Driving distance 100 km. Driving time 5-6 hours.
Drive from Telavi to Tusheti. Crossing the highest passable pass in Georgia Abano Pass (2,926m) with a wide view of Tusheti in the north and the Alasani valley Kakheti to the south. Tusheti is distinguished by beautiful alpine meadows and beautifully preserved pine forests. The road is one of the most difficult mountain roads not only in Georgia but also in the South Caucasus. Unique cultural heritage monuments, ancient settlements, samples of folk handicrafts, items of former culture are still preserved in Tusheti. Arrival at the administrative center of Tusheti - Omalo.
Rest break. In the afternoon, ascent to the fortified Keselo from Omalo and a visit to the ethnographic tower museum.

Day 3

Omalo-Shenako-Diklo-Agiurta-Omalo
walking time: 6-7 h. Lowest elevation: 1880, highest elevation: 2206m.
Trekking tour to Schenako and Diklo and Agiurta, picturesque villages in the upper Tusheti (duration approx. 6.7 hours). In the evening return to Omalo and overnight in a guest house.

Day 4
Omalo-Dartlo-Kvavlo-Dano-Parsma-Girevi
Walking time: 5-6 h. Lowest elevation: 1850 m, Highest elevation: 2150 m
Hike from Omalo into the Pirikita Alazani valley to Dartlo. Hike over a small pass to Dartlo to a typical Tushetian fortress village. Dartlo is considered to be the most beautiful village in Tusheti. The well-preserved towers and houses, built close together as if they were connected, are particularly impressive. both Pagan and Christian religious buildings are sites to see, go up to village Kvavlo which is overlooking Dartlo. Just a short walk but ascent from 1850 to 2150m. That’s from where eagles fly to the Caucasus mountains. Dano - small mountain village overlooking the Pirikiti Alazani river in Tusheti. The village is at an altitude of some 2.400 meters and the range over it rises up to 3.200. Lastly for the day hike to the last inhabited village of Girevi.

Day 5
Girevi - Kvakhdi on the way to Atsunta Pass.
Walking time 5-6 h. Lowest elevation 2017m. Highest elevation 2600m.
Today the group is accompanied by pack horses. Equipment, tents, and luggage are loaded onto the horses, and then the most beautiful part of the hike begins. The road goes uphill towards Atsunta Pass. The route leads along a mountain path above the Alazani River, over the abandoned old fortified village of Chontio and through several small springs to Kvachidi, a shepherd's settlement on the river bank.

Day 6
Trekking across the Azunta Pass.
Walking time 7-8 h . Lowest elevation 2600 m. Highest elevation 3442m.
Today you can enjoy the unique and breathtaking landscape with endless expanses and the snow-capped peaks of the Great Caucasus. After a hike uphill, you will overcome one of the highest passes in the high mountains, the Atsunta Pass (3442m). Today's route is the greatest challenge, as extreme differences in altitude have to be overcome on stony, sometimes difficult terrain. The mountains become noticeably higher and the route more adventurous, the river has to be crossed twice. The route is one of only two connections to the neighboring mountain region of Khevsureti.
Please note, at this altitude the temperature is low, less than 15 degrees, and the weather conditions are changing. You have to have suitable clothing and equipment.

Day 7
Atsunta - Ardoti.
Walking time 6-7 h. Lowest elevation 1830m. Highest elevation 2940m.
Hike from the Azunta Pass over the "Rhododendron Mountain". The path runs through the middle of a flowering rhododendron meadow. The descent is relaxed and then a rather strenuous, longer stretch of the route (approx. 2 hours) always comes down. After a total of 6-7 hours of hiking, you reach the fortress settlement Ardoti. The village has hardly been inhabited for over a hundred years and is one of the endangered monuments in Georgia.

Day 8
Ardoti-Mutso - drive to Shatili.
In the morning you will be picked up by car and driven to Shatili.Hike with short breaks over the beautiful and impregnable fortress Mutso which takes over 20-30 min . Drive to the fortress town of Shatili, where you will say goodbye to the horses and stay in a guest house.

Day 9
Shatili-Roshka-Chaukhebi.
Driving to Roshka 50 km. Driving time 3 h.
walking time 3-4 h. Lowest elevation 2000m. Highest elevation 2812m.
Drive-by off-road vehicle to the Lower Khevsureti village of Roshka (2000m). Stops on the Datvisjvari Pass is a high mountain pass at an elevation of 2.689m and other mesmerizing destinations. From the Roshka hike to the Chaukhi massif.

Day 10
Trekking Day. Cross Chaukhi Pass - Juta - Drive to Stepantsminda.
Walking time 6 h. Lowest elevation 2200m. Highest elevation 3340m.
Climb up to the Tschhauchi Pass (3340m). The estimated climb time is 4 hours. You will be rewarded with great views of Mount Kazbegi, the Chauchi rock mountain, and the Chewi region. Here the temperature is also low enough (12-18 grad).
The Tschauchi Mountain is popularly known as the “Georgian Dolomites”. The mountain range separates two regions - Khevsureti and Chevi. After a short break, we descend to the mountain village of Juta.
In the village Juta, we are picked up by the off-road vehicle and driven to Stepantsminda.

Day 11
Stepantsminda - Tbilisi.
Driving distance 180 km.
Walking time 3-5 h.
Visit Gergeti Trinity church dating back to XIVc with breathtaking views of Mount Kazbegi and Greater Caucasus mountain range, Dariali gorge visit Georgian- Russian border and Gveleti waterfalls.
Tour ends with return to Tbilisi (B/-/-)


Useful information: Please note that during the trekking the travelers cross high mountain passes (more than 3000 m altitude) of Caucasus for several times during which the night temperature drops below the 15 degrees. During the tour trekkers need warm clothing, suitable trekking shoes and equipment. Useful equipment during the trekking also includes a backpack (capacity 10-20 L) for keeping personal items, sunglasses, sun protecting cream and hat.

Please note: When crossing the Atsunta and Chaukhi Passes the temperature up in the mountains drops drastically so don’t forget to bring warm and comfortable jackets.
