Discover the Treasures of Kakheti: David Gareji, Sighnaghi & Georgian Tradition.
The Full Day David Gareji and Sighnaghi Tour is a captivating journey that immerses you in the history and beauty of the Kakheti wine region. Your adventure includes four essential cultural monuments: the Davit Gareji Monastery Complex, the traditional village of Badiauri, the sacred Bodbe Monastery, and the picturesque City of Love, Sighnaghi.
The Semi-Desert Monastic Complex: We depart Tbilisi early in the morning, driving approximately 100 km toward the unique Gareja semi-desert landscape. Davit-Gareja is a remarkable rock-hewn Georgian Orthodox monastery complex. Established in the 6th century by St. David, one of the thirteen Assyrian Fathers who preached Christianity in Georgia, the complex originally consisted of 19 religious buildings carved directly into the rock. Though the complex faced destruction and looting during historical invasions, Davit-Gareja remains one of Georgia's most stunning historical and cultural monuments, offering a profound spiritual atmosphere in its remote setting.
Taste of Tradition: Bread Baking After exploring the remote monastery, we continue our journey (approx. 100 km from Tbilisi) toward Sighnaghi. We make a crucial stop in the village of Badiauri. Here, you will have the chance to witness the authentic process of Georgian bread baking—the traditional Shoti bread baked in the clay Tone oven—offering a true taste of local Georgian traditions.
Sacred History at Bodbe From Badiauri, we continue to Bodbe Monastery. This is one of the most famous and holy places in Georgia because it is the burial site of St. Nino, the female evangelist who introduced Christianity to Georgia in the mid-4th century. The site, whose church acquired its current shape in the 9th century, is highly revered and according to legend, St. Nino possessed healing properties.
Sighnaghi: The City of Love Finally, our tour culminates with a visit to Sighnaghi. This charming 18th-century town, known as the “City of Love”, features architecture inspired by southern Italian classicism blended perfectly with traditional Georgian elements. The entire city is surrounded by a magnificent high defending wall, originally rebuilt by King Erekle II in 1772, and is one of the largest and most famous forts in Georgia. Following recent restoration, Sighnaghi attracts thousands of tourists who come to enjoy the stunning panorama opening onto the Alazani Valley and the majestic Caucasus Mountains. This unique blend of old-world charm and modern restoration makes Sighnaghi an unforgettable final stop.
